New LDP leader Ishiba to dissolve Lower House after debate with opposition

S/ Ishiba Shigeru, new Liberal Democratic Party president: I would like to seek a judgment (in a general election) after engaging in debate with the opposition. However, I must also seek a prompt decision and want to determine the appropriate timing for (the dissolution of the lower house).

On the dissolution of the House of Representatives, there were discussions within the LDP about holding a general election as early as October 27, without engaging in substantial deliberations in committees such as the budget committee after the establishment of the new government.

Ishiba expressed the view that he would like to conduct thorough discussions in the budget committee before any dissolution.

If the budget committee meetings were held, it is highly likely that the election would be postponed until after November.

Ishiba also said that regarding whether he will approve candidates associated with so-called “slush funds,” he will hold appropriate discussions and fulfill his accountability for them to be suitable for endorsement.

When asked whether he would appoint Takaichi or Koizumi, with whom he competed in the leadership election, he indicated that personnel matters were still undecided.

Ishiba emphasized that appointments will be made to maximize capabilities but did not provide further details.
