Pianist friend speaks about Empress Emerita Michiko turning 90

S/ Koyama Michie, Pianist / I feel true deep kindness whenever I see her near.

Pianist Koyama Michie spoke about Empress Emerita Michiko, her friend of nearly 20 years who turned 90 on October 20.
Michiko went to Koyama's recital on October 5, a day before fracturing her leg.

S/ Koyama Michie, Pianist / I was just surprised. I thought, "What?"

The two have met at events including private music gatherings.Koyama says she can feel the former empress's character when she plays accompaniments on the piano.

S/ Koyama Michie, Pianist / Empress Emerita doesn't just play to the music, but she creates her music by reflexively feeling how she can guide her fellow performers. I think this comes from her ability to accurately perceive signs around her in daily life.

Koyama said she was reminded of her friend's consideration when the coronavirus hit.

S/ Koyama Michie, Pianist / In the beginning, we could not hold concerts. When she called me on the phone, she would always ask how everyone is doing and what the situation is like for musicians.

There was also a time when Emperor Emeritus Akihito joined a practice session without prior notice.

S/ Koyama Michie, Pianist / She said, "Oh, he's coming," and suddenly stood up. She then walked over to welcome Emperor Emeritus in a very charming way.

Aware of how strong the bond between the couple is, Koyama said she feels for the empress emeritus as she heals from her injury.

S/ Koyama Michie, Pianist / I think she is always thinking about the emperor emeritus. It makes me sad that she might also be emotionally hurt. I just wish her a speedy recovery.
