Re-elected Tokyo Governor calls for revised election law

Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko met with Prime Minister Kishida Fumio on July 9 for the first time after she was re-elected to her third successive four-year-term.

Koike requested that the Public Offices Election Act be revised, citing hecklers during her street speech and the lack of places to display posters due to the record-high number of candidates.

She said that the issues were beyond what were anticipated when the law was established, and that she wanted the problem to be addressed.

Koike and Kishida also confirmed that the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the central government will work together to tackle issues such as the declining population and natural disasters.
