Japanese man taken into custody for abducting student to Southeast Asia

A Japanese man was taken into custody from an airport in Bangkok, Thailand on February 13 for allegedly abducting a high school student living in Japan.

According to Thai police, the 29-year-old man befriended the student through an online game and invited him to Thailand, where he was then transported to Myanmar.

The man lured the high school student to Myanmar where a scam group operates and forced him to participate in scams last month.

The Japanese Embassy had requested assistance from Thai authorities to search for a missing person, and the student is already back in Japan.

The man is expected to be deported to Japan where he faces multiple arrest warrants including kidnapping for profit.
