ANA flies first freighter with sharkskin-inspired coating

All Nippon Airways launched Japan's first freighter with sharkskin-inspired coating on September 2.

The surface film that imitates shark skin allows the Boeing 777 aircraft to glide through the air with less air resistance..

About 2,000 sheets that are each a meter in width and 50 centimeters in height are applied to the aircraft.

The film is expected to cut annual fuel consumption by about 250 tons and carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 800 tons per aircraft.

ANA plans to use the sharkskin technology on passenger aircraft starting next spring..
