Japan marks 79th anniversary of end of WWII
Japan marked the 79th anniversary of the end of World War II on August 15.
Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako, Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and others observed a moment of silence at the annual memorial ceremony for the war dead.
Later, Emperor Naruhito delivered a speech.
Emperor Naruhito / I sincerely hope that we will all unite our hearts and continue to seek peace and happiness for all in the future. While thinking of the many peaceful years after the war, I think back to the past, and upon deep reflection, I sincerely hope the horrors of war will never be repeated. I would like to express my deepest condolences to those who have died in battle, and together with all the people of Japan, I pray for world peace and the further development of our country.
About 3,400 participants, including the bereaved ones of the war dead, attended the ceremony this year.
