Volcanic ash warning system to be introduced in Japan

The Japan Meteorological Agency plans to introduce a volcanic ash warning system to help residents brace for potential disruptions that can be caused by mineral particles produced in the event of a volcano eruption.

Officials say volcanic ash accumulation can paralyze transportation systems and metropolitan functions.

Over 30 centimeters of ash can cause wooden homes to collapse.

The agency plans to issue an advisory when 0.1 millimeter or more of ash fall is expected, upgrade it to a warning for 3 centimeters or more, and announce an even stronger message when at least 30 centimeters of ash accumulation is anticipated.

The officials said they will discuss the specific ways to disseminate the advisories and warnings.

They expect to introduce the system in several years.
