Typhoon Dujuan is expected to approach the Kanto region, centered on the Japanese capital of Tokyo, during the upcoming Silver Week holidays starting this weekend.

Officials are warning of extremely heavy rain and strong winds.

The storm is likely to move westward near the Ogasawara island chain through September 19 before turning north.

On September 20 to 21, the typhoon is forecast to come close to the Kanto region while maintaining storm-force winds.

It is then expected to transition into an extratropical cyclone east of Japan on September 22.

On Chichijima island, which is already within the strong wind zone, a maximum peak gust of 20.2 meters per second was recorded shortly before 11 a.m. on September 18.

Typhoon Dujuan is characterized by active rain clouds on the north side of its center.

Downpours are expected to begin in the Izu islands and the Kanto region between September 19 and 20, even before the typhoon’s closest approach.

During the peak rainfall period from the morning of September 20 to the morning of September 21, heavy rainfall of up to 200 millimeters could fall on the Izu islands and southern Kanto.
