Emperor and empress host Autumn Garden party with Olympians and other guests
Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako hosted the autumn garden party on October 30.
Among the approximately 1,400 guests at the Akasaka Imperial Gardens in Tokyo were Japan's gold medalists from this year's Paris Olympics.
Crown Prince Fumihito and Princess Kiko also attended.
The Empress and female members of the royal family were dressed in kimonos, and Princess Aiko, the only child of Naruhito and Masako, attended in kimono for the first time.
The guests included judoka Abe Hifumi, who won the men's 66-kilogram title for the second straight Olympics.
The imperial couple talked male gymnasts including Oka Shinnosuke who won triple gold in the men's team, all-around individual and horizontal bar competitions in Paris.
They spoke to architect Kuma Kengo who designed the National Stadium used for the Tokyo Olympics.
They also talked with female javelin throw gold medalist Kitaguchi Haruka.
Emperor Naruhito
You were great.
KItaguchi Haruka, Female Javelin throw Gold medalist
Yes, thank you very much.
Empress Masako
You were splendid.
Kitaguchi Haruka
Thank you very much.
Empress Masako
From the first throw.
Kitaguchi Haruka
Yes, I haven’t been able to throw from the first round until now.
Emperor Naruhito
It was 65 meters?
KItaguchi Haruka
Yes
Kitaguchi Haruka
I think I can throw it over the pond over there.
Emperor Naruhito
Can you skateboard on grass like this?
Emperor Naruhito
Because it is a slope here.
Horigome Yuto, Skate board Men’s Street Gold medalist
It’s not impossible, at least.
Empress Masako
When I was a child, I skateboarded.
Yoshizawa Coco, Skateboard Women’s Street Gold medalist
Oh, is that so?
Empress Masako
My friend had a skateboard, and since there was a slope in front of my house, I just slid down like this. I enjoyed it several times.
Yoshizawa Coco
We may skateboard together.
Princess Aiko, attended the garden party for the second time, reportedly spoke with javelin thrower Kitaguchi about watching the javelin event at the National Sports Festival in Saga.
