Family buried by mudslide in Aichi Prefecture
Rescue efforts continued in Aichi Prefecture, central Japan on August 28 after a family of five was buried alive by a mudslide.
A 47-year-old woman living in the house called the police around 10PM on August 27, saying that a mudslide struck her house and a family of five was buried alive.
Two women, including the woman who reported the incident were rescued.
Efforts for the remaining family members continued on the morning of August 28.
138.5 millimeters, or more than a month’s worth of rainfall in a typical August, was observed in the city from the night of August 26 until August 27.
Heavy rain and flood warnings had been issued but no evacuation orders were in place when the mudslide happened.
Typhoon Shanshan has brought torrential rain to Japan, disrupting transportations across the country.
Weather officials are expected to issue Emergency Warnings to the southwestern Kyushu region on August 28.
