Japan PM to call on opposition party for partial cooperation

Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru is soon expected to call on the Democratic Party For the People for partial cooperation, according to multiple government sources

The move comes after the ruling party lost its majority in the lower house election. The cooperation of opposition parties will be essential for a stable government.  The Democratic Party For the People has expressed a negative view in forming a coalition, and the prime minister has called for cooperation on a policy basis.

S/ Tamaki Yuichiro, DPP leader / What we want is not a post, but the realization of economic policies that were promised during the election, including the wage hike. We will do our utmost to realize our policies, so we will not join a coalition.

The opposition DPP’s leader Tamaki emphasized that what is required from the administration now is to listen to the voices of many people.  

The DPP plans to require the ruling Liberal Democratic Party to break the “1.03 million yen wall” which is forcing spouses to take low-paying jobs to avoid high taxes.The LDP meanwhile hopes to gain cooperation in the prime ministerial nomination election.

Lawmakers are making preparations to convene a special Diet on November 11.
