Possible megaquake warning to be lifted today
Japan’s Cabinet Office said on August 15 that the alert warning of a possible massive Nankai Trough earthquake will be lifted today if no abnormal phenomena are detected along the trough ranged from southwestern Japan to Shizuoka Prefecture in central Japan.
The warning was issued on August 8 after a magnitude 7.1 earthquake occurred in the Hyugana Sea in southwestern Japan.
The advisory was issued for the first time in Japan that the chances of a megaquake happening are higher than usual.
The Meteorological Agency has been closely monitoring for any abnormalities in the area.
There were no earthquakes on August 13 and 14 that were registered above level one in Japan's Seismic Intensity Scale, with level seven being the strongest.
An agency expert said seismic activities are still active but no changes other than those typically observed after an earthquake have been detected.
Government officials are urging people to be prepared for evacuation at any time, at least until 5 p.m. today, and to continue maintaining earthquake preparedness in their daily lives.
