Record-breaking rainfall continues to soak eastern Japan including the Tokyo metropolitan area due to the slowly approaching Typhoon Shanshan, known as Typhoon No. 10 in Japan.
Officials are calling for caution as the rain is forecasted to continue throughout the weekend.
Eastern Japan is experiencing intense rainfall as rainclouds are moving in from southern Japan.
A record-breaking over 300 millimeters of rain was measured in 24 hours in the metropolitan area as well as neighboring Kanagawa prefecture.
Typhoon Shanshan is forecasted to pass through southwestern Japan through Saturday and shift into a tropical cyclone around Sunday.
Because of the typhoon’s slow speed, the rain is likely to last.
Aggressive rainfall is expected due to rainclouds further away from the typhoon’s center coming towards eastern and central Japan.
Around 300 millimeters in southwestern Japan and 150 millimeters in other regions of Japan are forecasted to accumulate by ay noon.
A linear precipitation zone is likely to occur by Saturday, increasing the dangers of heavy rainfall-induced disasters.
Officials warn of landslides, flooding of lowland areas and rivers.
