Cyberattack on Japan Airlines affects holiday travels
According to Japan Airlines, a cyberattack on its internal and external network equipment began at around 7:30AM on December 26.
The attack has caused a malfunction in their system that communicates with external systems, leading to issues with their app and baggage check-in machines across Japan.
In response, JAL temporarily shut down its network and is hurriedly checking the status of system restoration, but the impact is spreading to several airports across the country.
As of 10:00AM, at least 14 domestic flights have been delayed, with further delays on both domestic and international routes to be expected.
New ticket sales for aircraft departing on December 26 have also been suspended.
JAL is considering how to identify and respond to the attacker and has commented that it deeply regrets any inconvenience caused to its customers.
