8 killed, 17 injured in slashing at school in China
S/Watanabe Masayo, NNN Shanghai Bureau Chief: It’s been one night since the incident and many parents are lined up in front of the school to pick up their children who are living in the dormitories.
8 people were killed, and 17 others were injured on November 16 when a 21-year-old man slashed students with a knife at Wuxi Vocational College of Arts and Technology in the province of Jiangsu, near Shanghai, China.
The man apprehended at the scene was previously enrolled at the school but had failed his graduation exams.
Police also believe the man committed the offence because he was dissatisfied with the remuneration at the workplace where he worked as an apprentice.
On the morning following the incident, people could be seen laying flowers in front of the school where the slashing spree took place.
S/Visitor who left flowers: As a father myself with a daughter of my own, I sympathize with the victims’ families.
However, the bouquets were quickly removed, and it is believed that the authorities are wary of spreading unrest in society.
Meanwhile, Hong Kong media reported on November 17 of a text believed to have been written by the accused as a suicide note before the crime.
Along with complaints about the school, the note details how he worked as an apprentice for 16 hours every day, but his wages had been overdue.
It also contained claims that he would use his death to push for better labor laws in China.
There has been a series of indiscriminate killings in China, and President Xi Jinping issued instructions on November 12 to strictly prevent similar incidents.
