2 pandas from China make debut at WDC zoo: Can they change US-China relations?

S/Yamazaki Daisuke NNN Correspondent: Many people have come to see the pandas. Pandas have come back after almost one year.

Two giant pandas newly loaned from China, were shown to the public on January 24th at the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute in Washington, D.C., These pandas, long-standing symbols of U.S.-China friendship, were once returned to China in November 2023 amidst heightened tensions between the two countries, suspending "panda diplomacy." And now the pandas are back.

A visitor to the zoo commented,

S/ Visitor: I am really glad that they did that. I am just worried because the relations between U.S.and China, it would take a lot longer and that we won’t get pandas any more.

China is said to strategically lend pandas for improving the country’s image and ease anti-China sentiment.

On the starting day the pandas' public viewing, the Chinese Embassy hosted a reception attended by U.S. government officials.

S/Chinese Ambassador to the U.S., Xie Feng:
Our bilateral economic ties are essentially mutually beneficial and win-win. Tariff war, trade war, industrial war or tech war would produce no winner.

He also made remarks on the importance of continuing the dialogues during the challenges in the Trump Administration. His remarks implicitly urged continued dialogue, even referencing the challenges faced during the Trump administration.
