Princess Yuriko turns 101, oldest imperial family member
Princess Yuriko of Mikasa turned 101 on June 4.
She is not only the oldest living member of Japan's imperial family but also one who has lived until the oldest age since the Meiji era that began in 1868.
Yuriko is the widow of Prince Takahito of Mikasa, who lived until age 100.
She is Emperor Naruhito's great-aunt.
In March this year, the princess was hospitalized in Tokyo after being diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia and showing signs of a possible stroke.
Imperial Household Agency officials said she later developed a mild cerebral infarction and is currently recuperating.
The officials said she is not taking food or water through her mouth but opens her eyes and nods when someone speaks to her.
They said she is also continuing rehabilitation, including sitting on a wheelchair.
