Emperor Naruhito reflects on Japan - UK relations
Emperor Naruhito held a press conference on June 19, ahead of his official visit with Empress Masako to the UK, which will start on June 22.
Emperor Naruhito: Empress Masako is grateful for the invitation from the UK and looks forward to our visit, recalling with nostalgia the two years she spent at Oxford University. Thinking about the history of exchange between Japan and the UK, we hope that the friendship that has been built up between the two nations will be further deepened.
The Emperor reflected fondly on his time studying abroad and expressed his gratitude for the long exchange between the British Royal Family and the Imperial Family.
He also expressed concern for King Charles III and Catherine, Princess of Wales, saying that he was very grateful to be welcomed by them despite their current health situation.
Emperor Naruhito said of the history of the last war in which the two countries fought each other:
Emperor Naruhito: I think it is important to remember those who have suffered, in order to deepen our understanding of past history and to nurture a peace-loving spirit.
Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako will visit the UK for eight days.
