Flights and trains cancelled as Typhoon Shanshan approaches Japan
As Typhoon Shanshan, also known as Typhoon No. 10, approaches the Japanese archipelago, transportation across the nation has already been significantly impacted.
For air travel, several flights to and from airports in the Kyushu region have been cancelled.
Japan Airlines cancelled 112 flights for August 28, and 60 more have been cancelled for August 29.
All Nippon Airways cancelled 30 flights for August 28, 173 flights for August 29, and an additional 16 flights for August 30.
For rail travel, several Shinkansen lines have also been affected, with suspensions or reductions in service scheduled for the next few days.
JR Kyushu announced that service will be suspended between Kumamoto and Kagoshima Chuo stations on the Kyushu Shinkansen starting the evening of August 28.
Service between the two stations will also be suspended for all of August 29.
Service on the Kyushu Shinkansen on August 29 between Hakata and Kumamoto stations will run with reduced frequency from first train until 8AM.
After which, service will be suspended for the rest of the day and will not operate a direct link with the Sanyo Shinkansen.
Additionally, service on all lines of the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen will be suspended.
Meanwhile, the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines may be subject to planned service suspensions between August 29 and September 1 for some or all sections of their lines.
