Chinese tourist arrested for entering Kyoto temple on its day off

Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple in Kyoto is known for having 1,200 rakan statues representing Buddha's disciples who have achieved enlightenment.

It is popular among foreign tourists.

The incident occurred on April 2, the temple's day off.

At around 3:30 p.m., the chief priest found a man on temple grounds and called the police.

The suspect likely climbed the stone wall and went over a fence to enter the temple.

The police arrested the 28-year-old male Chinese national who came to Japan for tourism purposes.

He admitted to the allegation of trespassing, telling police that he saw that the tourist spot was closed, so he climbed a fence and went in without permission, knowing that what he was doing was wrong.

The police are looking for another individual who is believed to have illegally entered the temple along with the suspect.
