Himeji Castle plans to increase entrance fee for foreigners

The city of Himeji in Hyogo Prefecture, western Japan announced on June 16 that Himeji Castle plans to increase entrance fees for foreigners to support castle maintenance and curve overtourism.

The entrance fee for those over the age of 18 is currently 1000 yen or around 7 dollars.

Mayor Kiyomoto Hideyasu is considering a quadrupled price hike of around 30 dollars for foreign tourists coming to the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Around 450,000 foreign tourists visited Himeji Castle last year, which makes up approximately 30% of total tourists to the castle.
