Olympic medalist-turned politician fined 1 million yen and faces suspension of right to vote
The Tokyo Summary Court issued a summary order against Olympic medalist-turned House of Representatives lawmaker Horii Manabu on August 29, fining him 1 million yen.
If finalized, he will face suspension of his right to vote and to run for office for three years.
The decision came after the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office filed a summary indictment against him for violating the Public Offices Election Act and the Political Funds Control Act.
He violated the Public Offices Election Act for illegally donating approximately 600,000 yen to 52 voters in his constituency in the form of condolence money and funeral flowers.
He also violated the Political Funds Control Act for not reporting revenues totaling about 17 million yen he had received as kickbacks for three years until 2021 from a faction led by former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo.
The faction collected political funds by selling party tickets and made some of them slush funds.
On August 28, Horii announced his resignation as a member of the lower house, bringing an end to his 12-year political career since transitioning to national politics.
