Japan records hottest summer in 120 years

Japan recorded the hottest summer in 120 years this year.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the average temperature between June and August was 1.76 degrees Celsius higher than average, making it the hottest since record keeping began in 1898.

Extreme heat persisted due to a strong Pacific High and meandering westerly winds, making it easier to be covered by warm air.

Areas on the Pacific side of eastern Japan also recorded the heaviest rainfall in August since record keeping began.

Slow-moving Typhoon Shanshan brought record rainfall across the country.
