Chinese foreign minister holds talks with senior Japanese ruling lawmaker Nikai
Visiting Japanese senior ruling lawmaker Nikai Toshihiro, the former secretary general of the Liberal Democratic Party, held talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on August 28.
During the meeting, they discussed China’s ban on Japanese marine product imports in relation to the release of treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the sea.
According to those accompanying Nikai, Wang reiterated China’s position, saying that it would be difficult to lift the ban unless there is progress on the water issue.
He emphasized that as long as Japan and China do not reach agreement on the matter, Chinese consumers would likely continue to avoid buying Japanese products.
In regard to an assertion that any contingency in Taiwan would also constitute an emergency for Japan, Wang reaffirmed China’s stance that Taiwan affairs is a domestic issue.
Members of Nikai’s multi-party delegation expressed concerns about recent incidents involving Chinese military aircraft entering Japanese airspace, as well as the detention of Japanese nationals.
These issues were raised during a dinner following the talks.
