Tokyo department store introduces new service to cut customer wait time

While the increase in foreign tourists is boosting profits at Matsuya Ginza department store, it is also causing some worries.

S/ Matsuya President Furuya Takehiko: Japanese customers in particular are missing out on quite a few opportunities to be served.

Matsuya President Furuya says that increased customer traffic, including wait times at cosmetics counters, has led to missed opportunities to attract new customers.

To address this problem, the store has introduced a new service.

S/ Clerk: Are you coming to pick up your goodst today?

Customers can now reserve products and complete duty-free procedures online before visiting the store.

Upon arrival, they simply present their passport or other documents at a dedicated counter to purchase the items.

This service is expected to reduce wait times and allow staff to spend more time assisting customers.

The service is also available to customers living in Japan, and since products can be delivered, the company hopes to attract people living in rural areas and younger customers.
