Retired emperor and empress visit Tokyo park to see daffodils in bloom

Emperor Emeritus Akihito and Empress Emerita Michiko visited Kasai Rinkai Park in Tokyo on the morning of February 26.

Tokyo had springlike warmth, with temperatures rising to 17 degrees Celsius in the central area around noon.

About 57,000 Japanese daffodils grown at the park's flower garden are in full bloom.

Officials said the retired emperor and empress, aged 91 and 90, respectively, took a walk in the daffodil garden for about 15 minutes.

The couple stayed at the park for about an hour.

Akihito abdicated in 2019 and was succeeded by his elder son Emperor Naruhito.
