Ishiba to meet with Trump for in-person summit on Feb 7
Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru is set to meet with US President Donald Trump for their first summit talks on February 7 in Washington.
Japanese officials said that in the meeting, Ishiba intends to confirm Japan-US cooperation in responding to China's increasing expansion and North Korea's repeated ballistic missile launches.
To counter Trump's America First policy, Ishiba plans to explain how Japanese companies are making large investments in the United States and contributing to creating jobs in the country.
The Japanese leader is also preparing to discuss the expansion of imports of liquefied natural gas and other resources from the United States.
Ishiba has said that he will approach the talks by showing what Japan can do and then seeking understanding and cooperation from the United States.
The officials said he wants to build a relationship of trust through direct talks with Trump.
Trump told reporters last week that he is looking forward to the meeting with Ishiba, adding that he likes and has great respect for Japan.
