Govt panel compiles evacuation guidelines for major Mount Fuji eruption

A government panel has compiled a set of actions for residents to take in the event of a major eruption of Mount Fuji.

In the worst-case scenario, over 30 centimeters of ash is expected in areas including parts of Kanagawa Prefecture two weeks after a massive eruption.

Even in central Tokyo, 10 centimeters or more of ash are anticipated, possibly paralyzing various functions of the metropolitan area.

The panel of experts said in their recommendations that residents are generally envisioned to continue living at their residences.

They broke down the actions to take into four categories based on the amount of volcanic ash accumulation, with more than 30 centimeters being the most severe at Stage 4.

Residents in Stage 4 areas are urged to evacuate to other regions.

Fujii Toshitsugu, a University of Tokyo professor emeritus who heads the panel, emphasized the importance of having emergency supplies stocked as part of preparations.
