First-Ever Test Removal of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Fuel Debris Completed
In September this year, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) deployed a fishing rod-like device at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant's Number 2 reactor and began the test removal of fuel debris.
Last month, several grams of fuel debris were collected, and TEPCO completed the series of operations at 11:40 a.m. on November 7.
This is the first time fuel debris has been removed from a nuclear reactor in more than 13 years since the 2011 nuclear accident caused by a devastating earthquake and tsunami.
The fuel debris will be analyzed at a facility in Ibaraki Prefecture to determine its composition and structure.
The fuel debris removed this time is estimated to be about 5 millimeters in size and weighs less than 3 grams.
