Snow falls on Tokyo and mountainous areas in surrounding Kanto region
Snow fell on central Tokyo and the mountainous areas in the surrounding Kanto region in eastern Japan on March 19.
As a strong cold front flowed in, snow accumulation of 1 centimeter was observed in central Tokyo at 10 a.m.
While snowfall in the capital has passed its peak, heavy precipitation was expected to continue in the Kanto region, possibly affecting transportation systems.
To the north of Tokyo, the Okunikko area in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, got as much as 47 centimeters of snow.
In other areas, 6 centimeters of snow fell in Chichibu, Saitama Prefecture, 2 centimeters in the city of Saitama and 1 centimeter in Utsunomiya, the capital of Tochigi.
According to Central Nippon Expressway, snow caused the Chuo Expressway that connects Tokyo and Nagoya, central Japan, to close between Hachioji Junction and Ichinomiya-Misaka Interchange and between Otsuki Junction and Kawaguchiko Interchange.
The Higashi-Fujigoko toll road that links Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectures was closed between Fujiyoshida Interchange and Subashiri Interchange.
