Deer spotted running through the streets in Sapporo

Viewers captured these wild beasts running at high speeds through the streets of Sapporo in Hokkaido on April 6.

The beasts in question were deer.

More than 10 deer were spotted racing through the streets.

They ran down the road and across to the sidewalk.

Onlooker: The sounds of their hooves on the pavement was incredible. I'm glad they didn't run into anyone.

Deer populations have been increasing in the northern island of Hokkaido.

The number of road accidents caused by deer last year was almost three times higher than it was 10 years ago.

Viewers also sent in this footage from Muroran in August 2024.

Onlooker: They’re huge!

Onlooker: I can’t believe it!

The deer were just lying in the backyard and eating grass without a care in the world, even when the camera approached them.

According to experts, the time of the year when the snow melts in the spring is when deer are more active.

Kamie Masahiro, Asahiyama Zoo Yezo Sika Zookeeper: I think we have reached a time when we have to be constantly aware of wildlife and be aware that they are nearby.
