Mt. Fuji climbers to be charged fee on Shizuoka side next summer
According to sources, Shizuoka Prefecture is considering three proposals for an entrance fee on the Shizuoka side of Mt. Fuji.
The prefecture aims to introduce an entrance fee for climbing Mt. Fuji from next summer under the name of an entry control fee.
Currently climbers are asked to pay a voluntary cooperation fee of 1,000 yen to support the conservation and maintenance of the mountain.
But the entry fee will be mandatory for collection on the three routes of Fujinomiya-guchi, Gotemba-guchi and Subashiri-guchi, and three prices are being considered: 3,000 yen (19 US dollars), 4,000 yen (25 US dollars) and 5,000 yen (30 US dollars) per person.
Japan’s iconic mountain straddles Shizuoka and Yamanashi prefectures and can be climbed from either side. Yamanashi has already begun charging a toll of 2,000 yen per person this summer.
Shizuoka Prefecture also intends to set up nighttime regulations for each trail, such as from 4 p.m. to 3 a.m. the next day at the Fujinomiya-guchi and will submit a draft ordinance summarizing these regulations to the prefectural assembly next February, with the goal of implementing the regulations next summer.
