Tokyo takes title for nation's longest shopping district
Tokyo officially took the title from Osaka for Japan’s longest shopping district, also known as shotengai, by connecting a few shopping streets together on November 20.
The roughly 3-kilometer shopping district is located on Kokusai Street near Sensoji Temple in the popular Asakusa neighborhood.
The new shopping district’s title was cemented through the establishment of the Tokyo Kokusai Street promotion association.
Meanwhile, Osaka residents had a lot to say about losing the title.
S/ Osaka resident/ Number 2?! You’re saying a shopping street longer than this one was recently created?
S/ Osaka resident/ I’m in shock.
S/ Osaka resident/ Osaka went from number 1 to number 2? We have to get this street extended to take back the title.
Osaka residents were unable to hide their shock at losing the title.
