Emperor's Asian arowana to be shown at Ueno Zoo

The Asian arowana fish, which was gifted to Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako during their goodwill visit to Indonesia in June last year, will be shown at Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo.

The Japanese Imperial couple received a Super Red Arowana, a variety of Asian arowana, from Indonesian President Joko Widodo and his wife.

They also viewed the fish during their visit to Indonesia.

According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, after discussions among the relevant parties, the gifted arowana was accepted by Ueno Zoological Gardens and will be made available for public viewing in the future.

The arowana arrived in Japan on July 8, and was transported to Ueno Zoo, where it is being kept in the back area until it acclimates to its new environment.

Tokyo Metropolitan Government plans to create a new exhibition space where the arowana will be showcased separately from other arowanas in a different aquarium.

The opening date will be determined in the future.
