US bomb from World War II explodes at Japanese airport
A US bomb that was likely dropped during World War II exploded at Miyazaki Airport in southwestern Japan on October 2, creating a large crater and canceling all flights that were arriving at and departing from the airport.
Airport officials said that the hole was seven meters in diameter and about a meter deep, and the explosion source was a 500lb US bomb.
During the Pacific War, a large number of bombs are said to have been dropped mainly on the runway of Miyazaki Airport, which was built over a former naval air base.
Other unexploded ordinance were found and removed in 2009 and 2011.
