Typhoon Shanshan lashes Japan with heavy rain
Typhoon Shanshan lashed southwestern Japan with heavy rain, strong winds and high waves on August 29 as it slowly crawled northeastward along the Japanese archipelago.
The strong typhoon landed in Kagoshima Prefecture, disrupting traffic both on land and in air in the country, canceling bullet train operations and flights.
Warnings over mudslides were issued in parts of Kagoshima Prefecture on August 29 as the typhoon brought torrential rain to the area.
Strong gust that are believed to have been tornadoes were observed in Miyazaki Prefecture, southwestern Japan.
At least 31 people have been injured and 129 houses have been damaged due to strong winds.
Makurazaki in Kagoshima Prefecture recorded gusts over 185 kilometers per hour.
Misato in Miyazaki Prefecture has observed 827 millimeters of rainfall as of the evening of August 29, surpassing a month’s worth of rainfall in a typical August.
Authorities warned that a “life-threatening situation” was imminent for areas in Oita Prefecture and urged residents to take “life-saving actions.”
Weather officials are calling on people to stay extremely vigilant for mudslides and swollen rivers as the slow-moving typhoon is expected to deliver heavy rainfall.
