Empress Michiko cultivates royal silk
Japan’s Empress Michiko is beginning her yearly cultivation of silkworms.
Silkworms lay eggs on special paper, which the Empress then attaches to tree branches.
She also makes straw frames for the worms to build their cocoons.
Silk was once a key export for Japan.
Empress Shoken began to cultivate silk in 1871 at a time when the country had just opened to trade.
