Geisha giving thanks
Geisha are out and about in Kyoto today observing a traditional holiday.
August 1 is known as hassaku in the traditional lunar calendar.
Originally it was a day when farmers would offer some of their first wheat harvest to benefactors.
In Kyoto’s famous Gion geisha district, young geisha visit tea shops and other establishments where they learned necessary geisha skills.
They offer thanks to their teachers, and some even give gifts.
The geisha remained poised and put together despite the nearly 90-degree heat.
