Long-lost Utamaro masterpiece on show
People in Japan are getting their first look at a long-lost masterpiece by a 19th-century Japanese painter.
The painting by the renowned artist Utamaro was missing for 66 years, but went back on show today.
The large-scale work is titled “Snow in Fukagawa.” It shows geishas and courtesans warming themselves around a stove as they view a snow-covered courtyard.
The painting is part of a trilogy Utamaro created on the theme of snow, moon and flowers.
It went missing after being exhibited at a Tokyo department store in 1948.
But a fine art dealer found it in 2012.
“Snow in Fukagawa” is on show through June at Okada Museum near Tokyo.
