Children’s Day takes place on May 5th in Japan.

To get ready, people in Miyazaki in western Japan hoisted traditional streamers into the sky.

But these streamers have a unique twist on the usual ones.

Instead of carp, the streamers are shaped like whales.

Japanese people see the streamers as a symbol of strength and display them in hopes kids will grow up healthy and strong.
