Japanese agriculture and seafood exports best ever
Japanese cuisine is famous worldwide, but now the country’s farm and seafood products are beginning to make an impact.
Japan logged record exports of agricultural and marine products in 2013.
Japan’s Agriculture Ministry says the value of exports rose by 22 percent last year to nearly 5.4 billion dollars. That’s the highest figure since records began in 1955.
It’s also the first rebound since the Fukushima nuclear accident of 2011 prompted other countries to restrict Japanese products.
Apple exports doubled to 70 million dollars, as did scallops with a total value of nearly 390 million dollars.
Agriculture ministry officials attribute this progress to the decreasing impact of the nuclear crisis. They also say promotional campaigns have contributed to enhance the image of Japanese products abroad.
