NUCLEAR RESTART NEXT YEAR?
A nuclear power plant operator has applied for the safety inspections necessary to restart a reactor in central Japan.
Chubu Electric Power Company operates the Hamaoka nuclear plant in Shizuoka, about 150 miles from Tokyo. Located directly above the intersection of two tectonic plates, the plant has been shut since the Fukushima meltdown of 2011.
After installing a tsunami barrier twenty-two feet above sea level, the operator feels it is safe to restart.
If the inspections proceed smoothly the plant could restart as soon September of next year.
