Japan’s parliament acted to liberalize the country’s electricity market today.

Under the Electricity Business Act households will be able to choose their own supplier from 2016.

Currently, ten regional utilities including Tokyo Electric monopolize local markets.

The new law aims to boost competition among suppliers.

It’s the latest shakeup of Japan’s power industry in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011.
