Where to store nuclear waste?

Japan's government creates a radioactive waste storage feasibility map, one step toward building a final repository for Japan's 12,000 tons of nuclear power generation byproducts.

Japan's first nuclear reactor went on line in 1966 and began producing nuclear waste.
Today the government is struggling with where to permanently store 50 years' worth of radioactive garbage.
Officials have finally taken a concrete step toward finding a municipality to host such a facility.


"核のゴミ" 処分場の適正地域は? マップ公開

原発から出る廃棄物、いわゆる「核のゴミ」は、長期間、非常に強い放射線を出すため、数万年にわたり地下深くに閉じ込める最終処分場が必要だ。
その候補地をめぐり、政府は、科学的観点から建設に適した地域を示した全国地図を初めて公表した。
