Mt. Fuji climbing season underway
Dozens of climbers greeted the dawn from the top of Japan’s Mt. Fuji this morning.
The official climbing season begins today.
The sacred peak is Japan’s tallest at almost 3,800 meters.
It became a World Heritage Site last year.
This year climbers are being asked for the first time to pay a fee of about ten dollars.
The money will be used to help keep Mt. Fuji clean.
The World Heritage listing is boosting visitor numbers and providing enough toilets has become a challenge.
Mt. Fuji will be open for climbing through mid-September.
