Chinese newspaper shows nuclear clouds over Japan
An official Chinese newspaper has drawn Japan’s ire for depicting nuclear clouds over Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The illustrated map appeared in the Communist Party’s weekly Chongqing Youth News in the southwestern city of Chongqing.
The graphic is titled “Japan wants a war again.”
It accompanies an article criticizing Japan’s recent move to reinterpret its peace constitution to give its military freer rein to act abroad.
Both Hiroshima and Nagasaki were hit by atomic bombs at the end of World War Two.
Japan’s Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida said the illustrations harmed the feelings of the atomic bomb survivors.
He said as the only country to have suffered atomic bombings, Japan could not excuse them.
Kishida said Japan would lodge a formal protest with China.
Ties between the two countries have been strained over World War Two history and a territorial dispute.
