Govt eases weapons exports
The Japanese government is revising its weapons policy, paving the way for export, development, and production of arms.
This is Japan’s first revision to its "three principles of arms export" in 47 years.
It is now possible for Japan to cooperate with other countries to develop weapons.
Only weapons that pass a stringent national security council examination would be eligible for export.
New regulations stipulate that weapons could not be sent to countries at war or those that violate United Nations policies.
Exports would be carefully managed to prevent redistribution without approval from the Japanese government.
Officials in Tokyo say they are contributing to peace and international cooperation by updating arms procedures and regulations.
A yearly weapons report will be available to promote transparency.
