Japan, India boost ties in weekend summit
Japan and India boosted security and business ties in a weekend summit between Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Abe was the first Japanese Prime Minister to be chief guest at India’s Republic Day.
Abe tried to sell Singh on Japan’s bullet trains as India looks to improve its infrastructure.
Abe said both sides agreed to expand cooperation in investment, trade and personnel exchanges.
In the background of the visit was China, which sits between India and Japan.
With Japan and India agreeing to hold regular defense talks, Abe hailed stronger ties between the two countries.
Japan’s Abe has held a flurry of overseas visits since taking office at the end of 2012.
But ties with neighbors China and South Korea have sunk to new lows.
