Japan tables aid for Syria chemical weapon drawdown
Japan will donate 1.4 billion yen—about 14 million dollars—to help eliminate Syria’s chemical weapons.
This is the single largest donation among Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons member countries.
Director-General Ahmet Üzümcü and Japanese Permanent Representative Masaru Tsuji signed paperwork at the OPCW headquarters today.
Üzümcü expressed his gratitude, emphasizing Japan’s important role in global disarmament.
The organization plans to completely eliminate chemical weapons from Syria by June of this year.
Officials say that progress is slower than expected due to the civil war still dragging on.
