A zoo in Shizuoka Prefecture has put on display a snail many experts consider one the most beautiful in the world.

Polymita picta is referred to more commonly as the “Cuban land snail” or “painted snail.”

It’s known for its shiny and brightly colored shells.

Experts say the popularity of these snails has led their numbers to decrease significantly.

Polymita picta has been declared a protected species in Cuba.
